A blocked gutter does not only overflow. It pushes water back under the roof covering, where it travels inside the structure and appears as a ceiling leak nowhere near the gutter. Plenty of “roof leaks” are drainage problems.
Why a gutter problem looks like a roof leak
When a gutter, valley or downpipe is blocked, water has nowhere to go. It backs up along the gutter until it reaches the roof covering, then gets in under the tiles or sheeting at the eaves or the fascia line, and travels inside the roof structure.
The result is a damp patch or a stain on a ceiling that has nothing to do with a hole in the roof. Owners often pay for a roof repair that was never needed, and the leak returns at the next heavy rain because the drainage is still blocked.
Overflowing gutters cause other damage too: water running down the wall, damp in the plaster, erosion at the foundation line, and on a coastal property, faster corrosion of everything the water touches.
What gutter repair involves
The drainage system is checked as a whole rather than as a gutter on its own. Gutters, valleys, outlets and downpipes are all part of one path, and a clear gutter with a blocked downpipe overflows exactly like a blocked gutter.
Where the gutter is sound, it is cleaned and the joints and brackets are repaired. Where it has rusted through, sagged or is undersized for the roof area it serves, it is replaced, often with a longspan or fascia gutter with fewer joints to fail.
The fall along the gutter is checked at the same time, because a gutter that does not run the right way will hold water regardless of how clean it is.

Gutters and the rest of the roof
Drainage is part of the roof, not an accessory to it. When a roof is repaired or replaced, the gutters, fascias and downpipes are the right time to deal with them as well, because the scaffolding and access are already in place.
If your roof has been leaking and the gutters have not been checked, that is worth doing before anything else is repaired. It costs less than a roof repair and sometimes solves the whole problem.
When a repair is not enough: full re-roofing
Not every roof can be saved with a repair, and pretending otherwise wastes your money. If the covering has gone porous, the sheeting has rusted through, the battens have rotted, or the same area has been repaired repeatedly, the roof has reached the end of its service life.
We arrange the whole job when that happens: strip and dispose of the old covering, replace damaged timber, battens and underlay, and install the new roof in tile, slate, IBR or corrugated sheeting, with new flashings and gutters where they are needed. If a repair will genuinely hold, we would rather do that and say so.
